  71.     The IESG approved the minutes of the July 27th IESG meeting.

  73.   o Action Items

  75.     The IESG has been reviewing action items by email, and made plans to
  76.     review outstanding actions at the next meeting.

  80.     The next meeting was scheduled for August 17th.  The IESG will 
  81.     try to meet weekly for the next several weeks to clear away a
  82.     growing backlog of protocol and management issues.

  84. 2) Protocol Actions
  85.  
  86.   o PPP Authentication
  87.  
  88.     The PPP Authentication protocol is nearing the end of its long
  89.     journey toward Proposed Standard.  The token is currently with the
  90.     Working Group.
  91.  
  92. ACTION: S. Crocker: Make sure the PPP Authentication guys finally reach
  93. agreement on the remaining issues with PPP Authentication.
  94.  
  95.   o TCP/IP Header Compression
  96.  
  97.     Little progress has been made in identifying the items that need
  98.     clarification in the Header Compression document.  Because Noel
  99.     Chiappa has left the IESG, the responsibility for this protocol has
  100.     been passed to Dave Borman.
  101.  
  102.   o IP and ARP over HIPPI
  103.  
  104.     The Internet Draft "IP and ARP over HIPPI" was reviewed by Philip
  105.     Almquist.  This is a large and relatively complex document
  106.     explaining how to run IP and ARP over HIPPI channel.  HIPPI was
  107.     originally intended as a high speed bus, but with the introduction
  108.     of switches has become more LAN-like.  In addressing the issues
  109.     involved with running ARP over HIPPI, the document goes to some
  110.     length to clarify the model HIPPI as a LAN.
  111.  
  112.     The IESG discussed the scope of the document and whether it was
  113.     appropriate for the IETF to standardize a document dealing with the
  114.     use of HIPPI as a LAN, and agreed that in so far as this needed to
  115.     be addressed for ARP and IP to function on HIPPI, it was
  116.     acceptable.
  117.  
  118. ACTION: Borman -- Review for technical accuracy and editorial
  119. completeness the IP and ARP over HIPPI document.
  120.  
  121. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- With the review and of Dave Borman, craft and send
  122. a recommendation to the IAB to publish IP and ARP over HIPPI as a
  123. Proposed Standard.

  125.   o PPP NCP for CLNP
  126.  
  127.     Philip Almquist reviewed the Internet Draft "The PPP OSI Network
  128.     Layer Control Protocol (OSINLCP)" and determined that the document
  129.     acceptable as a Proposed Standard.
  130.  
  131. ACTION: Piscitello -- Provide an additional review of the OSI NCP
  132. document.

  134. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- With Piscitello's review of the document, craft
  135. and send a recommendation to the IAB to publish the PPP NCP for OSI as
  136. a Proposed Standard.

  138.   o PPP NCP for AppleTalk
  139.  
  140.     Philip Almquist reviewed the Internet Draft "The PPP AppleTalk
  141.     Control Protocol (ATCP)" and determined that the document was
  142.     acceptable as a Proposed Standard.

  144. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Craft and send a recommendation to the IAB to
  145. publish the PPP NCP for AppleTalk as a Proposed Standard.

  147.   o Telnet Remote Control Option
  148.  
  149.     The Internet Draft "Telnet Remote Flow Control Option" was written
  150.     by Dave Borman and was reviewed by Russ Hobby.  The IESG approved
  151.     this document as a Proposed Standard.

  153. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Craft and Send a recommendation to the IAB to
  154. publish the Telnet Remote Flow Control Option as a Proposed Standard.

  156.   o Naming Guidelines for Directory Pilots
  157.   o String Representation of Distinguished Names
  158.  
  159.     Comments were received by the IESG on these documents and the
  160.     documents are being edited to reflect the positive comments.  IESG
  161.     consideration will be delayed until current versions of the protocols
  162.     are available.
  163.  
  164.   o Ethernet MIB
  165.  
  166.     Comments were received by the IESG during the last call period.
  167.     These comments are currently being incorporated into the document.
  168.     IESG consideration will be deferred until a new version will be
  169.     posted as an Internet Draft.

  171. 3) Technical Management Issues
  172.  
  173.    o OSPF AS
  174.  
  175.    After a long delay, the IAB Applicability Statement (AS) for OSPF
  176.    to be the "common" Interior Gateway Protocol is ready to be advanced
  177.    as a Proposed Standard.   Because of the large delay between the
  178.    IESG recommendation and the IAB document, the IESG recommendation
  179.    appears quite dated.  The IESG discussed the possibility of updating
  180.    the recommendation or merely asking that it not be published as an
  181.    RFC and not referenced in the IAB AS.  The IESG agreed that
  182.    publishing the recommendation was a good thing, but not wanting
  183.    to delay the OSPF AS any longer, opted to decouple the two
  184.    documents.  Time permitting, the IESG recommendation will be
  185.    re-worded and published as an RFC, however, the IAB AS should be
  186.    posted as soon as possible, without the reference to the IESG
  187.    recommendation if necessary.

  189. ACTION: Gross -- Notify the IAB that the IESG does not want the OSPF AS
  190. delayed pending IESG rewrite of their recommendation and encourages the
  191. IAB to post the AS as an Internet Draft as soon as possible.
  192.  
  193. ACTION: Gross -- Update the IESG recommendation that OSPF be chosen as
  194. the Common IGP and submit it as an RFC.
  195.  
  196.    o SNMP Evolution.
  197.  
  198.      Chuck Davin prepared a note outlining a course of action in moving
  199.      toward a new version of SNMP.  The IESG reviewed this note, and
  200.      with specific changes endorsed it.  After the note is sent to the
  201.      IETF, the IESG plans to review the charter of the SNMP Evolution
  202.      Working Group pending the selection of a chair.
  203.  
  204. ACTION: Davin -- Send the SNMP Evolution plan to the IETF.
  205.  
  206. ACTION: Davin, Vaudreuil -- Craft and get IESG approval of charter for
  207. the SNMP Evolution Working Group charter.
  208.  
  209.    o Proposed IETF Working Group on IETF/IAB procedures.
  210.  
  211.      The IAB is working with the ISOC Board to form an IETF Working
  212.      Group to review and improve the procedures by which the IETF and
  213.      the IAB make standards.  The IESG was given a draft version of
  214.      this proposal for comments and the IESG had no objections.
  215.  
  216. ACTION: Gross -- Convey to the IAB the IESG agreement with the IAB/ISOC
  217. plan to create an IETF working group to examine the procedures of the
  218. IETF and IAB.
